Your tasks

As Lead Data Scientist you will be responsible for guiding the Data Analytics Center of Excellence of Deutsche Post DHL Group from a technical perspective. You will ensure that state-of-the-art methods are applied and that we are always up to date with respect to Data Analytic methods and technologies.

You will run projects in a wide variety of applications, bringing business benefits to our operative divisions by challenging and collaborating with other Data Scientists on applied methodologies throughout projects. You will lead and mentor Data Scientists on their daily work, helping them to find the best solution for a problem and explaining advantages and disadvantages of each solution from a more technical point of view.

For example, you will develop statistical or machine learning models that forecast daily shipment volumes for accurate operational capacity planning together with junior colleagues helping them to improve their technical knowledge. Techniques you might use include time series analysis, linear and non-linear regression, clustering methods, and Bayesian statistics.

You will interpret modeling results in a business context and discuss these with the members of your team and possibly top management. In order to embed data-driven decision-making in operations, you will drive the build-up of methodological skills and knowledge transfer acquired from completed projects.

With your expertise, you will also help to identify new strategic application areas, use cases, or products by applying innovative data analytics methods and technologies. Your profile

  • University degree in Statistics, Computer Science or related analytical field or comparable qualification. 
  • At least four years of relevant professional experience 
  • Experience leading projects and/or teams from technical perspective
  • Extensive knowledge of statistics and machine learning from a theoretical as well as from a practical perspective, experience with time series forecasting projects is a plus
  • Very good programming skills and/or experience in scripting languages (Python, R, Scala or others)
  • Experience with Big Data technologies like Spark or Hadoop is a plus
  • Ability to produce outstanding creative and analytical solutions based on clear and thorough analyses of complex processes and business relationships 
  • Very good written and spoken English, German proficiency is a plus
  • Comfortable explaining complex analytical and technical content to various audiences, ranging from operational specialists to members of top management
  • Energetic and success-oriented problem-solver
  • Independent work ethic, integrity and loyalty, positive “can-do”- attitude
  • Passionate team player
